POEMS BY ÍÑIGO LÓPEZ DE MENDOZA:

ÍÑIGO LÓPEZ DE MENDOZA (1398-1458), Marqués de Santillana, the son of the Admiral of C astile and nephew of López de Ayala, was born at Carrión de los Condes. He was a skilful politician and bitterly opposed to Alvaro de Luna. He died at Guadalajara on March 25, 1458. He is remarkable for a fine classical knowledge, and for his acquaintance with all the literary forms of the Provençal and Italian schools. He is thought to have been the first to employ the sonnet form in Spain.
