EVOLUTION

by: John Banister Tabb (1845-1909)

      UT of the dusk a shadow,
      Then, a spark;
      Out of the cloud a silence,
      Then, a lark;
      Out of the heart a rapture,
      Then, a pain;
      Out of the dead, cold ashes,
      Life again.

"Evolution" is reprinted from The Little Book of American Poets: 1787-1900. Ed. Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1915.
